What is self-care after all?

Self-care. Lately we have been hearing more and more about self-care. More specifically how to do it, why we should do it. What are its benefits. Today I will solve this curiosity.

Let’s start with the basics. What is self-care?

Self-care concerns all aspects of ourselves. As it turns out, self-care is not only about taking care of our body and our external appearance. It concerns both our “outside” and our “inside”.

It’s about the general approach we have to ourselves. How much we care about our health. Our physical, mental and spiritual health.

So when we feel good we can offer more. So, in this way, we can be more efficient in life and in our relationships.

What does this mean in practice?

When we take care of ourselves, our “inside” and our “outside”, we become one with ourselves. Don’t forget that our self is always there. It can be our ally or our adversary.

First of all, how we talk to ourselves, our reflection in the mirror, plays a big part in how we perceive ourselves. Speaking lovingly about us, to us, is a key element of self-care.

It is well known that good sleep, a healthy diet and physical exercise are elements of self-care. And well-being (double win). Just as the ability to be able to be responsible for ourselves is also an element of self-care.

Of course, the same goes for being connected to our thoughts, our feelings, our needs and our wants.

To do as we wish. Put ourselves first. How many times have you gone out after work, when you felt tired, so as not to upset your friend?

Therefore, recognizing our needs and choosing ourselves is a key element of self-care.

How can we get started?

Self-care is a constant work done with ourselves. It concerns all aspects of our lives. It is the synthesis of the harmony we have when we recognize our purpose, our needs and begin to take steps towards them.

It is not something that we can change with the snap of our fingers like a mechanical god. It requires daily work.

Think of it like a bicycle. Most of us didn’t take off the training wheels directly. We even fell a couple of times. But in the end we were able to do without hands on the wheel (don’t try it at home).

A little daily exercise.

A simple exercise you can do to start your self-care journey. Something that helps a lot of people is mirror exercises. Every time you pass in front of a mirror, say to yourself:” (Your name)…I want to meet you. I want to love you truly.”

Try repeating the phrase out loud. At least 3-5 reps each time you do it. At first you may feel uncomfortable, strange, funny. The more you practice it, the more natural it will feel. Try writing down your feelings and thoughts the1st time you try it, and every day for a week. At the end of the week edit what you have written down. You will certainly notice a difference for the better.

The important thing is that whatever you do, do it consistently. One small step at a time. The journey of self-care is just that. A journey into yourself. Enjoy.
