The house of Odysseus, Ithaca

Penelope and Ithaca…

When Odysseus set off for glorious days in Troy, his beloved wife, Penelope,
was left alone to unwittingly whet men’s appetites for a lovely queen.
Before long, the palace was full of obnoxious suitors who were persistently courting the queen.
In addition, they made Penelope promise to marry one of them.
To keep them away, he came up with an idea: he promised to come to a wedding with the best of them.
when he’d finished knitting a shroud.
So he spent the day weaving it and the night washing it.
By doing so, she managed to stay away from the suitors for 20 years, until Odysseus returned to Ithaca.

Worth a visit.

Despite its proximity to Kefalonia (2 km northeast) it is much more peaceful, quiet and undiscovered than Kefalonia,
is thus an ideal place for alternative activities and holidays that meet the standards of the most demanding.
With its large mountainous surface of 27 kilometres long and a large mountainous surface of 6.5 kilometres,
boasts many hiking and mountain biking trails in a sequence of blue and green
along the coast and through olive trees, cypresses, pines, oaks, oak trees, beeches and carob trees on the hills.
Scuba diving and sea kayaking are also some of the options, while the Cave of the Nymph will give you the opportunity to combine a fascinating visit with a legend: it was there that Odysseus hid the gifts he had brought with him.
from the land of the Phaeacians.

Beaches.

Beach lovers will enjoy a plethora of options to suit all tastes, from sand to pebbles,
from rocky to also greenish backgrounds, from peaceful to busy.
So some of them are: Lucha, Filiatro, Saracen, Right, Minimata, Yidaki, Eagle, White Yale, White Yale, Aphales, Kurvoolia.

Villages.

The island’s approximately 3,000 inhabitants live in some of the following villages:

Deep: Characterized by the characteristics of the local architecture, it is the capital of the island and the seat of the Naval and Folklore Museum and the Archaeological Museum of Ithaca.
Vathi is built in a bay, the centre of which is decorated by the tiny island of Lazaretto,
a former sanatorium and prison.

Perahori: A beautiful picturesque little village with stunning views of the island.
Built on the edge of the forest Afentikos Logos is the perfect starting point for walks
in the medieval ruins in the oaks.

Stavros: It is in the north of the island, this village hosts another Archaeological Museum, known for its clay mask
of the 1st century A.D. which reads “EYCHIN ODYSSEI” (= “wish for Odysseus” in ancient Greek).

Gastronomy.

It may be difficult to date local dishes from ancient times. So their taste is still legendary.
Try cod, tomatoes, fish savoro (fish fillet fried in vinegar, raisins, rosemary and garlic),
cherepato (grilled red chicken meat in a clay pot) and, for dessert, rhubarb.

Transfer to Ithaca.

The island is connected by ferry with the islands of Kefalonia and Lefkada and with the ports of Patras,
Kyllini and Astakos on the mainland.
In addition, Kefalonia is also accessible by plane.
