When we choose the look we create to make our appearance, some of us follow the fashion and trends of the season closely. Others, we use certain elements in our makeup that are more “ours” and that characterize us. How distinctive, however, can a makeup look be?
There are cases where a makeup look is so completely intertwined with the person who created it, that you could say that it has become their signature. Let’s look at some cases where the picture speaks for itself..
Amy Winehouse’s eye liner.
Words are superfluous. How many times have you sat in front of your mirror with your eyeliner brush in one hand and your makeup remover in the other? You struggle to make the perfect fine finish, you struggle to make it straight, you struggle generally..
And then Amy came along. Unconventional in everything she does and inevitably in her makeup. “I don’t care” is like saying. Strongly drawn finish with thick cheeky lines, which in no way can anyone support. A look full of tension and drama that perfectly expresses its unforgettable creator.
The Lightning of David Bowie
On April 13, 1973, the album “Aladdin Sane” is released and its cover becomes one of his most famous images.
Non-existent eyebrows. White-white skin. Fuchsia hard shadows that change the shape of his face into something alien. A red and blue lightning bolt pierces the right side of his face. An image that refers to an androgynous and strange creature from another world.
According to Brian Duffy, the photographer who clicked the photo in question, when Bowie said he wanted a lightning bolt on his face, Duffy and make-up artist Pierre La Roche copied the lightning bolt from a Sony roaster in the studio.
The faces of Kiss
In the era of the musical revolution, a band of young boys appears who look nothing like the other stars of the time. Their white dyed leather with black designs, inspired and executed by themselves, became their trademark.
The eyebrows of Nina Hagen
Generally the 80s as a decade is characterized by a dose of exaggeration. So as we refer to the beloved punk mom (maybe even grandma now), whose unique looks have gone down in history, we couldn’t expect anything less. Her make-up was of particular interest and in no way did she seek perfection when she created it. There was usually some version of very intense eyeliner on both the eyes and the eyebrows. She used to do a pulled finish on the top of the bow, in the exact same way that we do the “wing” on the outer corner of the eyes, giving her face an animalistic look.
The graphic liner of Siouxsie Sioux
From the mom of the punk scene we go to the grandmother of the goth scene. Tough and dynamic makeup with strong influences from ancient Egyptian looks. The graphic liner she used to do is definitely not an everyday walk around look (at least not yet). However, in his day, it was imitated by thousands of people who belonged to the more underground community and to this day you’ll find references in editorials, fashion shows and so on.
