For Tina Turner, her hair was much more than just a hairstyle.
A tribute to the hairstyling choices of the Queen of Rock & Roll.

Tina Turner, who “passed away” at the age of 83 on Wednesday, was not only recognized as the “Queen of Rock ‘n’ Roll”
for her unique successes and her ever-evolving, intense fashion image, but also for her hairstyles.

Turner’s hair was often combed as a kind of direct extension of her talent,
representing her intense stage presence, but also her emotional resilience in all the difficulties of life.

The Grammy Award-winning singer was known to wear wigs but she continued to become one,
with what people would remember as one of her most popular hairstyles: sharp, gravity-defying hair.

In the 1960s, Turner began to fully embrace wigs after a disastrous trip to the salon, which was replicated in the 1993 biographical filmWhat’s Love Got to Do With It, starring Angela Bassett.

She was often seen wearing wigs with straight hair, including the one above, which had deep brown braids,
slightly curled edges and a fan-like front flap.

As the singer’s career progressed, especially in her solo era, Turner began to customize her wigs.

During the 1979 performance in the USA, Turner wore a short brown wig that matched the
with the red, yellow and orange sequins on Bob Mackie’s dress.
The wig also had a front flap, which framed her face.

The 1980s

In the 1980s, she began to lean fully into her intense, rock ‘n’ roll aesthetic, which is reflected in her music,
her clothes and her hair.

When she performed in New York in 1989, the singer wore a voluminous wig with brown and blonde highlights.
The longer teased hair would become one of her signature looks.

While in Sydney in 1993, the singer wore a shorter brown and blonde wig with cropped edges.
The hairstyle caused a lot of movement while still having the texture and volume the singer was used to.

Tina Turner took to the stage with Beyoncé in 2008 to perform at the 50th annual Grammy Awards.
Singing a rendition of “Proud Mary”, the moment of the 2 singers,
has gone down as one of the most famous in the history of pop culture.

Turner paired her matching metallic outfit with a straight asymmetrical bob wig with brown highlights,
that matched Beyoncé‘s blonde highlighted hair.

Every appearance was unique, special, unconventional.
She will be remembered as a true Queen – the Queen of Rock and Roll.
