Makeup secrets for slightly older girls!

As we age, our skin changes dramatically. For starters, we have to deal with the fine lines and wrinkles we all know. In addition, the skin loses its elasticity, becomes drier and acquires uneven coloring and texture.

You may have already adapted your beauty routine to these new conditions, with anti-aging products that cover you better and improve any time damage. However, the makeup products you use can make a huge difference to your appearance! And to point out that, I’m not talking about specific shades of lipstick and shadows. After all, what makes you feel more beautiful is what suits you best, regardless of your age. But I’m referring to the textures and techniques you use!

So I’ll give you some small tips that will surprise you by how much they will enhance your natural beauty, and help you to have a fresh result!

Hydration before make-up

The first and most basic step, before you do any application on your face, is to use a moisturizer!

As our skin ages (and ageing doesn’t sound like a bad word because it actually starts to age at 20) and especially after menopause, the production of sebum and its ability to retain moisture decreases. Even skins that may have had a combination or oily type at a younger age, usually develop dryness over the years. Therefore, a proper moisturizer helps to make fine lines and wrinkles less visible and improve the appearance of the skin before anyone even starts applying makeup!

Never skip the primer!

When dealing with a more mature complexion, primer is always one of your strongest weapons! It is particularly beneficial, as it smoothes expression lines and wrinkles and prevents makeup products from “collecting” in them.

Extra tip: opt for a primer that gives a light shine to the skin, as this helps to combat dullness.

Prefer liquid foundation

The ideal base product for more mature skins is clearly a liquid thin foundation with a satin finish. This will make the skin look fresh and cool, which is the goal! It’s good to avoid powders, as well as products with heavy matte textures, which will make facial lines appear more pronounced.

Extra tip: mixing a drop of your moisturizer with the amount of foundation you’re going to use will elevate the look of your skin.

Use a tone warmer Foundation and Concealer.

To clarify. Under no circumstances do I mean to use something much darker. The rule of thumb is to always use foundation that is the exact colour of your skin. However, at older ages this absolute precision may end up making the skin look a little pale. So using a shade warmer Foundation and Concealer is a way to restore the colour that your skin has lost, as well as hide the discolouration that is created.

Extra tip 1: Make sure you have done a good blurring towards your neck, roots and ears so that you don’t see any colour difference.

Extra tip 2: Apply your products with a brush, so that you have uniformity and don’t create “holes” and “drips” that will ruin the final result.

Extra tip 3: Avoid applying product directly to areas where there are pronounced wrinkles. Ideally, lightly brush over them with whatever is left on the brush, not with extra product.

Choose a thin-flowing Concealer

The first part of the face that the passage of time makes its appearance is the eye area. Puffiness, dark circles, bags, “goose leg” and sagging under the eyes are the main problems faced by men and women. As the skin becomes thinner, heavier cream products do not flatter the skin and tend to “break”. So, when choosing your concealer, it is advisable to go for a moist, thin and lightweight product that will not emphasize the lines, but will visually reduce them and make the area look more relaxed.

Liquid blush

Avoiding powder is not just about covering products, but about any product on the skin. As we age, skin loses its natural pigmentation that makes it look vibrant and healthy and blush can do wonders to reverse this. However, in the wrong texture it can be disastrous. So by replacing your usual powder blush with a liquid blush, you can restore warmth and coolness to your skin without risking to accentuate potential wrinkles.

Extra tip: By the same token, you can replace your bronze powder, which you’d use for a more sun-kissed look, with a foundation with a light shimmer that’s three shades darker than your skin.

Naturally accentuate the contour of your eyes

With age, the skin around the eyes often becomes sagging and the eyelashes lose their intensity. To bring back that lost intensity, try highlighting the entire length of your eye contour with a soft brown pencil. In order to avoid a harsh effect, avoid clear and bold lines. A thin lash outline on the lashes, which you can then blend with a brush, will give strength to the look without weighing down the area.

Don’t forget the contour on the lips!

The natural contour of the lips is often altered as we age. The good news is that this can be easily corrected with a lip pencil. Try outlining your lips and slightly blurring the outline towards the inside of your lips before you apply your lipstick to give them a clear shape and volume.

Avoid the very intense shine!

Yes, a foundation or a blush with a satin finish will do wonders for the appearance of your skin, however overdoing it will have the opposite effect. Metallic textures or strong glitter in your products are best avoided.

And finally, the eyebrows!

It is perfectly natural that eyebrows are not as thick or as shapely as they used to be in earlier years. So if your eyebrows don’t look as thin, or not as thick as they used to be, try highlighting them with an eyebrow pencil or shadow to restore their shape. Fuller and raised eyebrows automatically lift the eyes and give the face a youthful appearance.
