What to do when your employer is toxic?

In Part A we looked at the basic characteristics of such a person and analysed the obstacles you encounter in your communication. In this article I will share with you some ways to take control of the situation!

First of all, you have to understand that you cannot be friends with this man. This is the starting point. So you have to find a balance in your communication that is satisfactory to you.

Some tips

Do not respond to his defiance . When he attacks you, don’t justify your behavior outright.

Example 1. The employee is excused.

Employer: How can you answer the customer like that?!
Employee: But she started it first…

Example 2. The employee shifts attention elsewhere.

Employer: How can you answer the customer like that?!
Clerk: Mr. Director, I would like to discuss with you what happened.

Try to minimize communication with him.

Put the responsibility on him. Ask his opinion about an issue at work. This way the employer will feel that he or she is confirming his or her authority. And if something goes wrong, he won ‘t be able to blame you, since the advice was his!

But if you want to react and make him angry, I have some advice here too. Ignore him! It’s one of the worst things for people who have an unreasonably big idea about their self.

And when it comes to the edge… Don’t fight alone. Find allies or ask for help. If the employer is abusive or even threatening, know that there are other legal remedies. For example, in some cases you can file a complaint with the Labour Inspectorate.

Of course I hope it doesn’t come to that! And find a balance with calm.
