When Odysseus set off for glorious days in Troy, his beloved wife, Penelope,
was left alone to unwittingly whet men’s appetites for a lovely queen.
Before long, the palace was full of obnoxious suitors who were persistently courting the queen.
In addition, they made Penelope promise to marry one of them.
To keep them away, he came up with an idea: he promised to come to a wedding with the best of them.
when he’d finished knitting a shroud.
So he spent the day weaving it and the night washing it.
By doing so, she managed to stay away from the suitors for 20 years, until Odysseus returned to Ithaca.
