And although the word acid may scare some, the proper use of salicylic acid in your skincare routine can not only combat existing blemishes but also prevent the appearance of future ones.

Salicylic acid is a BHA acid found naturally in plants such as willow bark. It easily penetrates the skin, softening and dissolving the keratin. Keratin is a skin protein that can clog pores, causing cells to stick together.

This ingredient is ideal for oily and blemished skin as it penetrates deep into the pores dissolving sebum. Specifically, salicylic acid acts by breaking down anything that clogs the pores. At the same time, it offers exfoliating action on the surface layers of the skin and has anti-inflammatory properties.

This speeds up the healing process of blemishes that appear suddenly, such as some pimples, and reduces bacteria on the skin. Of course, before you include it in your skincare routine, it’s a good idea to consult your doctor. This is particularly important if you are pregnant, as some BHA acids should be avoided during pregnancy.

As it is a very active ingredient, it is recommended that you gradually incorporate it into your skincare routine. Especially if you have sensitive skin, start with 1-2 times a week and increase the frequency along the way. This will reduce the chance of irritation. On the market, there are products with different salicylic acid contents, with a maximum of 2%. So, you can start with a product with a low content, gradually increasing it as your skin gets used to it.
