Everything you need to know if you have oily hair…
Many times clients visit us at the salon and complain that their hair feels unkempt, dull and greasy right after shampooing!
BUT let’s take things from the beginning and start with the cause…
Oily hair is a natural process due to the glands that produce sebum, which is where the good condition of the scalp is based, resulting in hair that looks soft, shiny and healthy. The over-secretion of sebum, however, creates the greasiness in the scalp and hair. This results in the hair being weighed down by the roots and often creates bigger problems on the scalp. For example dandruff or hair loss. For this reason, we have to diagnose and treat oily skin in time.
What are the reasons that cause this serious aesthetic problem?
- The hair type: If your hair is thin, because of the surface, the sebum passes into the hair shaft. While curly hair tends to trap sebum at the roots.
- Hormonal disorders: In puberty, in the difficult days of the month for women, in pregnancy, in menopause, hormonal fluctuations may lead to an increase in fatness.
- Skin diseases: Such as seborrheic dermatitis, psoriasis, eczema may also lead to dandruff in addition to oiliness.
- External factors: The wrong choice of shampoo, excessive use and quantity of conditioners, styling products, air pollution and weather increase oiliness.
I’ll advise you with smart and effective tips to reduce and tackle oiliness.
- Wash your hair every other day with a special shampoo containing anti-oily ingredients (clay, eucalyptus, quinoa, grapefruit, oats) and avoid 2-in-1 shampoos.
- Avoid using hot water when shampooing. It activates the sebaceous glands of the scalp resulting in greater production of sebum which in turn leads to greasiness.
- Rejuvenate your scalp while shampooing by massaging your scalp with your fingers and circular movements. This will remove the sebum.
- Apply the conditioner and mask correctly. Initially choose products whose composition is light and free of oils. Place a small amount of four fingers under the roots.
- Visit the salon and ask for a deep scalp cleansing (detox) with our special peeling. This will allow the scalp to “breathe”.
- Avoid touching your hair because when you touch it you transfer oils from your fingers to your hair.
- Clean the brushes and combs you use. Every time we brush our hair, the oils already present in the scalp are transferred to the comb. If you don’t clean it, these will be transmitted back to your hair every time.
- Use dry shampoo on the second day after shampooing, for immediate hair renewal. The ingredients in this shampoo absorb or prevent oil, leaving your hair looking fresh.
- The last tip I will share as a colourist is that dyeing, apart from the aesthetic aspect, also works as a therapeutic one, because the first definition I learned about dyeing is that it stains, bleaches and heals… and essentially its therapeutic action is that it cures greasiness. And I’m sure you’ve all noticed that when the root comes out of the coloring or dyeing technique the hair gets greasier…
