Shadow roots

Shadow roots or otherwise root shading

Root shading is something that has been very prevalent for a very long time now and has freed up the spectrum a little bit of color imprinting on the head.

It has given freedom of movement to the hairdresser and has taken the client who needed to renew her highlights every month and a half or so out of a difficult situation.

So today I won’t bore you too much, I’ll just say that this is one of my favorite techniques. And believe me, when hairdressers give something different to our long-time client who comes in and does the same thing and just wants a very small change, you can be sure she’ll love you even more.

As for you who reads me and is not a hairdresser, check out
as a chance to change the way you do your highlights a little bit
all these years and went after the text that would
read and ask your hairdresser or hairdresser
a shadow root.

What is shadow root?

It is a technique that is most often used when
we do classic highlights close to our roots,
when we do balayage which
starts from very high up near the root and when we do
any other drying technique, which is also close to our root.

But many times in more free techniques such as balayage, babylights
we don’t want these lines of the classic
reflection, or even where a freer technique begins, or even where a more free
we want it to look a little more faded.
So here is the technique to achieve it….

The procedure if one looks at it, although it seems very simple, is not
is not so simple. I mean, it takes some specialization
on the piece of paint and the craftsman should
is now experienced to avoid any accidents
which in this case will also be irreversible.

So after we have finished with the opening technique
we have chosen, we have washed our hair, we have
clean up any residues of discoloration product..
we choose a shade of paint in a more natural colour.
We usually choose basic colours.
As far as tonality is concerned, it has to do with how much depth we want to
we give. Usually the most correct and the most uniform
result, it becomes two to three tones darker than the opening we have done.

This is of course not absolute, but it is a basis for how we want to give this root shading. We don’t want to darken the root so as to completely change the colour gradient, we just want to create a shadow, so we choose to have up to two, maybe even three tones darker than our open hair.

After choosing the right shade we want, we place the dye on wet hair 1cm from the scalp up to 1- 1.5 cm outside the root.

Then I use a clean brush and with very gentle strokes I pull the colour slightly downwards, (but not more than 3cm from the root because if we go beyond 3cm from the root then we will create an unwanted dark background, which will look kind of good at first, but as the days go by it will look dull, which we don’t want).

Why should I shadow root?

  • will give you a modern aesthetic.
  • It will create effect three-dimensional
  • will be differentiated from the hardness of the openings in their original form.

In the next article we’ll talk about rootymelt, something similar, but with a completely different effect …
