Balayage or highlights? Which technique to choose

We will analyze a topic that for hair colorists, is a daily conversation in the salon.
What is the difference between balayage and highlights, as well as the pros and cons of each technique!

What is balayage?

Balayage is a free hair colouring technique, with roots from the French word “to sweep”.
It is created by the hair expert freely in the air, on a film, with sweet meches or with foils.
It is a personalized service, depending on the type and the desire of the client.
In this technique there are points that want the colour effect to have depth and points that want the colour effect to have depth.
that will give more intensity to the color.
The feeling that balayage gives is a sunkissed effect.
That is, as if the existing color has been opened up, with a smooth gradient, by the sun!

What are highlights?

Highlights are a classic method of hair drying, using foils.
In this technique we braid thin sections of hair.
These sections start from the roots to the ends, to create a uniform colour technique.

Differences between balayage and highlights

In balayage we have a natural shiny result with flexibility and adaptability in relation to the hair base.
We add brightness to the highlights with uniformity, so that the hair looks like it has been dyed completely.

The renewal in balayage is approximately 3 to 6 months, while in highlights from 1.5 to 3 months.
This is because balayage is a free technique with depth at the roots while highlights need more frequent touch-ups,
because there is a strong contrast in relation to the root that has grown longer.

Balayage is a modern and free technique while highlights are the classic technique that gives a sophisticated look.

Common points of balayage and highlights

In order to achieve your own technique, a proper diagnosis between you and the hair colorist must be made first.
You, collect photos on your mobile phone and discuss it with your colorist to see if it’s possible at first
the result and then proceed to the application.

Opt for qualified hair experts with technical training who will take care of your new hair color.

Make sure that the products the technician will use are with advanced technology for hair health and
for maximum colour effect.

Schedule your new appointment at the salon between the two techniques
for the maintenance and renewal of the shade you created.

And don’t forget that the hair routine continues at home to maintain the quality of the hair.
As well as preparing them for the next technique in the salon.
