Folegandros

But before we go to Folegandros, a few words about it.

Shining under the Aegean sun, Folegandros was named after the son of King Minos.
This strange destination enchants visitors with the untouched beauty of its beaches,
the bright blue of its waters and the unadulterated style of its architecture.

Initially, at 200 meters above sea level, travelers will discover the Kastro, a Venetian castle.
Chora, the capital of the island, is partly built on it.
The bougainvilleas leaning over the balconies, the whitewashed houses with sugar cubes
and the steep drops from cliffs convey the ethereal, yet wild beauty of the island.

Folegandros is therefore ideal for a peaceful holiday, delicious cuisine and stunning beaches,
blue waters of the Aegean Sea and secluded bays.

Sightseeing tour places

Walk through the cobbled streets of Chora, passing white houses with colourful doors and windows,
timeless creations of traditional Cycladic architecture.
For rest, the plane trees provide cool, welcome shade.
After the sun sets on the eternal blue of the Aegean Sea, meet the locals in the village squares.
They will surely serve you homemade dishes and local delicacies, such as “matsata” (handmade noodles with rooster or rabbit),
souroto (white goat cheese) and drink “rakomelo” (raki with honey) the famous distillate of the island.
Here you will find most of the nice hotels on the island.

Tour of natural and religious sites.

The Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary

Tower above Chora and with a stone path leading to it,
an impressive whitewashed church is waiting to be discovered.
There are theories that it was acquired on the site of an ancient temple, the church hosts important ancient inscriptions.
and pedestals of statues in the courtyard and inside.
Tradition says that the silver-plated icon of the Virgin Mary is miraculous.
So there is a connection with pirate stories, the metaphor of the image around the city in a procession,
is held every year on Easter Sunday.

Hiking Tip: Follow the rocky path that starts from Punta Square to the church
(walking time about 15 minutes).

Chrysospilia

Chrysospilia is a natural monument of great interest and not only for archaeologists and caveologists.
It is below the monastery of Panagia on a rocky beach,
30 metres above sea level, with impressive stalactites and stalagmites,
the cave is unique in the world for the ancient male Greek names on its walls and roof,
dating back to the 4th century BC.
Nicagoras, Themistocles, Cleon, Callimachus, Pythagoras and Lysicrates,
are some of the names that are on the walls of the caves.
So, according to some theories, the cave was used as a place of worship,
where they held ceremonies for young men coming of age.

Important information: accessible only from the sea, the cave is temporarily not available for visitors due to an ongoing archaeological research.
