How our personality affects our career development

Our personality is a set of preferences.
characteristics that are our strengths and the way we prefer to interact with each other, but also
which in some cases cause us problems.
We should note that every advantage we have can also be a disadvantage when it is strongly present.

20 years ago two psychologists, Robert and Joyce Hogan, created a list of characteristics,
which, when present to an intense degree, can cause us problems in our work.

Distancing characteristics, which drive others away:

Careful is the person who can be as careful as he is precise.
But when this characteristic is present in its excess, it can lead to
indecisiveness and risk aversion.

Enthusiastic being synonymous with passionate.
Very strong feature.
But when there is no moderation, it can cause outbursts and instability.

Relaxed indicates a person who is easy to associate with.
But it can also be passive aggressive, uncooperative.

Restrained are the people who are stoic and calm under pressure.
They seem cooperative and sensitive.
But the overly reserved are non-communicative.

Skeptics. You don’t fool them easily.
At the same time they can be skeptical, but they can also be quarrelsome.
So they have a cynical perspective, which makes it difficult to build a trusting relationship with them.

Characteristics with seductive qualities that attract other people:

Bold people, who are assertive and confident.
On the contrary, they can be arrogant and have a high opinion of themselves.

Fun people, who are very expressive.
“The joy of life” we would say.
In their excess, however, these individuals do not “filter” their words when necessary.

Imaginative people, creative and visionary.
They can have eccentric ideas and little stability.

Mischief-makers. Charming, persuasive and risk-tolerant.
They can become impulsive and manipulative.

Positive characteristics for employees, but not for decision makers:

Diligent individuals who are hardworking and have high standards.
Leaders with this characteristic are perfectionists and micromanagers.

Conscientious people, who are loyal and compliant, to please those in power.
But they can easily become submissive and condescending.

Managing our dark side

How can we be able to manage our dark side?
Self-awareness is the key!
We all have some elements of our work personality that are strong.
First we have to accept ourselves as we are.
Then we have to manage our assets and defects.

In order to be self-aware, we need to collect information about ourselves from others.
Certified and approved psychometric tests are designed to provide this information in detail.

Conclusion

To be able to develop our leadership skills we need to know ourselves first and secondly others.

There is no ideal professional personality.
The best leaders are those who accept and know how to manage their preferences to their advantage. They also realise that they cannot be competent and effective in everything and
that proper role assignment in the team is essential.
