A historical review of hair trends throughout the 20th century.

Through the observation of fashion trends in clothes, accessories and in our case hair, we see the evolution from decade to decade, distinguishing nuggets of the evolution of society.

1900:
This week we start with the 1900s, the so-called Edwardian era.
A sign of this era is the “big” hair. As the volumes of clothes get smaller, the volumes in the hair get bigger. The focus is on the “size” of the hair, regardless of length. Many times the hair is plumped up, with the use of additional wigs.

The most distinctive style was that of the Gibson Girl, an illustrated girl who was a benchmark for women of the era.

Another key point for the hair, was the pompadour style. Here, we see a high, rounded shape with a slope that is spaced from the head. The hair could be either straight or curly.
To create volume, the hair is supported by wire or a pad.

Special emphasis is placed on hair color, since dark hair should be smooth and soft, while light hair can be more casual.

A very important event of the decade is the creation in 1907 of the first synthetic hair dye formulas by the chemist Eugene Schueller, founder of L’Oréal.
