The nutritional value of oats

Oats are one of the healthiest grains on earth. Wholegrain oats are gluten-free and are an excellent source of important vitamins, minerals, fibre and antioxidants. Studies show that oats and oatmeal offer many benefits to good health. These include weight loss, lower blood sugar levels and reduced risk of heart disease.

Here are three of the health benefits of eating oats.

1. Oats are highly nutritious

The nutritional composition of oats is very well balanced, being a good source of carbohydrates and fibre, including the powerful beta-glucan fibre. Oats also contain more protein and fat than most cereals.

In fact, half a cup (78 grams) of oats contains:

Manganese: 191% of the EDP

Phosphorus: 41% of the PPP

Magnesium: 34% of the PPP

Copper: 24% of the EIA

Iron: 20% of the PPP

Zinc: 20% of the EPI

Vitamin B1: 39% of DM

Vitamin B5: 10% of HRS

Lower amounts of calcium, potassium, vitamin B6 and vitamin B3

2. Whole grain oats are rich in antioxidants

Whole grain oats are high in antioxidants and beneficial plant compounds called polyphenols. Most notable is a unique group of antioxidants called abenanthramides, found almost exclusively in oats, that can help lower blood pressure levels by increasing nitric oxide production. This gas molecule helps to dilate blood vessels and leads to better blood flow. In addition, abenanthramides have anti-inflammatory activity. Furulic acid, another antioxidant, is also found in large quantities in oats.

3. Oats contain a strong soluble fiber called beta-glucan

Oats contain large amounts of beta-glucan, a type of soluble fiber. Beta-glucan partially dissolves in water and forms a thick, gel-like solution in the intestine. The health benefits of beta-glucan fibre include: reduced LDL and total cholesterol levels, reduced blood sugar response, increased satiety and increased growth of good bacteria in the digestive system.
