As tempting as it may be to hide thin and flaky nails under a permanent gel manicure, there are many lifestyle changes that, collectively, can bring your nails back to their former glory days.
First we need to understand what causes the weakening of the nails.
Our nails are made up of layers of keratin, a protein also found in our hair and skin. As we age, the cells in our body produce keratin at a slower rate, which can cause our nails to weaken, but also cause dryness and dullness.
However, it is not only the aging process that can damage our nails. Exposure to too much cold, or even too much washing, but also contact with chemicals – especially now due to the pandemic – can damage our nails, leaving them dry and vulnerable.
The good news is that what we need to strengthen our nails is (literally) at our fingertips!
- Moisturise your hands and nails regularly
Frequently moisturising your nails and surrounding skin with hand cream can prevent further damage to their integrity.
- Maintain a shorter length
If you have brittle nails, consider reducing their length to increase their “strength”. Shorter nails are less prone to breakage because there are fewer exposed edges to open, and less surface area where water and chemicals can be absorbed.
- Handle the file with skill
Use a soft nail file and pay attention! Stroke in one direction, making long and quick (but gentle) movements. Back and forth with the nail file will definitely injure your nails.
