What is skinimalism?

When it comes to skin care, many people have long been under the impression that the more products you apply, the more glowing your skin will be. However, excessive skin care efforts can leave behind sensitive skin, redness, irritation and, in some cases, acne. For this reason, recently, the term skinimalism has been introduced in the field of beauty.

What is skinimalism? It is, in essence, a new skincare trend or practice that advocates a more minimalist approach to beauty routine. This means reducing the number of skincare and skincare products so that, by applying fewer products, we can let our real skin shine.

In particular, this new beauty trend is in favour of exploiting the properties of products intended for multiple uses and thus commits itself to a more sustainable (and economical) beauty routine.

So, when our skin is stimulated due to the use of multiple and active products, not only does it get “confused”, so we don’t see the expected benefits that the beauty products promise, but also, the overstimulation can leave the skin exposed to further problems.

“This is because using too many products, trying new formulas every day, applying the wrong coating or combining too many active ingredients overstimulates and confuses the skin,” says aesthetician Debbie Thomas. Due to the plethora of products found in the market, customers often get confused and end up overdoing it in terms of their use.

“The most common thing I see with my young clients is irritation, sometimes in the form of rashes, inflammation, flare-ups, redness and conditions such as dermatitis,” says the facial specialist. So it’s better for both the environment and your skin to get back to a basic beauty routine based on limited, multi-use products.
