The Prime Minister’s message on the loss of Mikis Theodorakis

“Today’s meeting is unfortunately overshadowed by a very sad piece of news: Mikis Theodorakis is now passing into eternity. His voice was silenced and with it the whole of Hellenism was silenced.

As it was written about Palamas, “we had all forgotten that he was mortal”. However, he leaves us a legacy of his songs, his political action and his national contribution at critical moments.

Romion today weeps. And that is why the government has decided to declare a three-day national mourning period starting today.

As you know, I have had the honour of knowing him for many years and, relatively recently, I even visited him. His advice was always valuable to me, especially those concerning the unity of our people and the crossing of dividing lines.

I believe that the best honour to this universal Greek will be for us, through our daily work, to put his message into practice. Miki is our history and we must continue it as he would have wanted”.
