Retinol entered the field of cosmetic dermatology a little late, but very quickly impressed with its benefits. It’s hard to ignore an ingredient that promises so much.

The term Retinoids describes vitamin A derivatives that block pores, boost collagen, reduce fine lines and accelerate the cell renewal cycle, balancing discoloration and smoothing skin – sometimes in as little as four weeks.

What exactly is Retinol

Retinol is a form of vitamin A which when converted to retinoic acid is essential for skin health as well as for healthy bone growth. Therefore, retinol is an excellent source of care for your skin.

How it works

  • Instead of removing dead skin cells, as many other anti-aging and acne products do, the small molecules that make up retinol go deep beneath the epidermis, the outer layer of the skin.
  • Once in this middle layer of the skin, retinol helps neutralize free radicals to boost elastin and collagen production. This creates a “pulsating” effect that reduces the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles and enlarged pores.
  • At the same time, retinol has an exfoliating effect on the surface of the skin that can further improve the texture and tone of the skin.
  • Retinol can also help to treat severe acne, as well as associated scars. It helps to keep your pores unclogged, preventing the formation of spots. If you have severe acne, your dermatologist may prescribe an antibiotic in combination with retinol treatment. Keep in mind that it may take up to six weeks to see improvement.
  • Finally, retinol has also been shown to balance skin hydration levels. The mild exfoliating effects help remove dead skin cells that can lead to moisture loss. This can even benefit oily skin by controlling excessive sebum production in the pores.
