L’Oréal Professionnel launches an innovative protocol that puts scalp care in the hands of hairdressers

With research showing that 67% of people worldwide have problems with their scalp,
we know that scalp care is the key to healthy hair.
Today’s and tomorrow’s hairdressers need a comprehensive range of professional products and skills,
to be able to help their clients to get rid of scalp problems and the discomfort they cause.

Tricho, a global debate

During the pandemic, as consumer interest clearly shifted from styling to fashion, the
to hair care as an act of self-care, online discussions about hair issues have exploded.
The analysis of the online chats therefore showed that reports of scalp problems increased by +76%,
characterized by the appearance of search terms such as “quarantined hair”, “itchy scalp” and “greasy”.
These figures were confirmed by consumer research, which showed that between 2017 and 2020, globally,
incidents of scalp discomfort increased by 36% while problems due to oily scalp increased by 15%.

Taking care of the scalp is an act of self-care

While in the West, scalp treatments are not yet an established practice, in Asia they are already an established service in salons. In Japan, a pioneering country in hair care, these high-tech services in the salon include a “spa”
for the head where carbonated water is used to remove dirt from the scalp.

When hairdressers become experts on the scalp

As part of the development of the Scalp Advanced range, L’Oréal Professionnel asked the following question:
“What if more hairdressers had the products, tools & skills that would give them the confidence & self-assurance
to take care of their clients’ hair?”.
So we want hairdressers to be trusted when it comes to hair care.
We collaborated with hairdressers and dermatologists to develop a complete range of products for all skin types.
the problems of the scalp, as well as an extensive training program that gives hairdressers the skills to
to become specialists in scalp issues dryness, discomfort, sensitivity, greasiness,
dandruff, or any combination of these.

Listening to what hairdressers have to say

For L’Oréal Professionnel, an innovative range for scalp care and the corresponding educational platform
could only take one approach: the professional one.
We know that, with more and more customers worldwide complaining about scalp problems,
it makes sense that hairdressers need the appropriate products, tools and skills.
In order to meet this need, we asked renowned hairdressers with expertise in the scalp to collaborate
with L’Oréal ‘s laboratories on the development of the Scalp Advanced range and the educational platform.

The science of hair

The skin on the scalp is very different from the skin on the rest of the body:

Faster renewal process
It lasts about 10 days instead of 26 days.
Greater production of sebum & sweat
Higher sebum production than anywhere else in the body: 150-500 ug of sebum per cm.
Thicker hair follicles
200-300 per cm. – 10 to 15 times more dense than in the forearms.

Where is the deregulation of the scalp due to?

Physiological production
Normal sebum production keeps the scalp moisturized and protected.
The hair is smooth and shiny.
When the production of sebum is disturbed or increased excessively, various scalp problems can occur.

Discomfort
Dryness on the scalp, oily scalp and dandruff, as well as external factors can increase
the sensitivity of the scalp leading to itching, stinging, and burning sensation.
It happens to more than 1 in 10 people in the world.

Oily
Grooming products, the change of seasons, hormonal changes and other factors can cause a build-up of
but also overflow of sebum in the scalp and greasiness in the hair.

Dandelion
Deteriorated barrier function, greasiness of the scalp, but also the imbalance of bacterial and fungal populations
on the scalp can accelerate cell renewal in the scalp skin.
Instead of being gradual, cell by cell, exfoliation takes place in extensive, visible clusters of thousands of
cells that detach from the scalp in the form of flakes or scales.

Hair care meets dermatology: The benefits for the scalp

We believe that hairdressers have the power to change lives.
Therefore, our goal is always to support our hairdressers with all the skills and tools they need.
to offer the best possible result to each of their clients.
And when we talk about the scalp, this translates into dermatological knowledge.
At L’Oréal Professionnel, we believe that hairdressers meet all the requirements,
to become experts in scalp care.
The hairdresser is the one who massages the client’s scalp during a treatment.
He is the one who discovers dandruff while combing his client’s hair.
The hairdresser is the one who has to make difficult decisions about colouring and treatments,
when his client’s scalp is stressed.
Our extensive training programme gives hairdressers the tools to become scalp experts,
dryness, discomfort, sensitivity, greasiness, dandruff, or any combination of these.

Scalp Keys: a completely new approach to scalp specialisation

Education is in the DNA of our brand, but the development of hairdressers is also part of our partnership with them.
Either in digital format via Access, the global platform dedicated to hairdressers’ education,
or face-to-face with practical seminars, training was, is and will be the cornerstone of the relationship between
hairdressers and L’Oréal Professionnel, the brand that has been supporting the hairdressing industry for over 110 years.
The new Scalp Keys training was developed jointly with Vivek Shyam Bhatia,
the celebrity hairdresser in Mumbai, India.
It consists of episodes, like a mini-series, and also includes practical seminars and formal certification.
Trainees will also have the opportunity to attend webinars
with a trainer in their country.
This innovative platform is based on a series of short, easy-to-digest videos that deal with
basic information on scalp care.
