For her first appearance at the Met Gala, American politician and activist Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez made a political statement. He was at the most glamorous night of fashion. She was surrounded by some of the most powerful and famous people in the world. What better time to write her message about taxing the rich in red on her dress? The Democratic congresswoman wore a white dress by Brother Vellies. On the back of her dress her political slogan was beautifully reflected in the white tulle. “Tax the rich!”.
“We don’t feel particularly comfortable once our clothes are given to the client,” says Brother Vellies’ artistic director Aurora James. “We must always continue to push ourselves, push our colleagues, push culture and push the country forward. Fashion is changing. America is changing. In this regard, I think Alexandria and I are the embodiment of the vision that fashion needs to consider as we work towards a more sustainable, inclusive and empowering future.”
The look was completed with a pair of red shoes from Brother Vellies, with long laces and coloured flowers along the heel. Her bag also read “Tax the rich!”. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is a far cry from the only politician to ever attend the Met Gala – Hillary Clinton in 2001. Yet she is the only one who used her time on the carpet to make a controversial political statement. Of course, who else in Washington would dare?
